Information for General Practitioners

GPs play a key role in helping patients make informed decisions about weight loss surgery.

How we work with GPs

We see general practitioners as partners in patient care. Keeping you in the loop before, during and after surgery means your patient gets the best support possible. We share updates, answer questions, and make sure you have the information you need at every stage.

Referral process

Consider referring a patient if they have a BMI over 35, have tried to lose weight without success, or have weight-linked health problems like diabetes or sleep apnoea. Early referral can make a real difference in managing and improving long-term health outcomes.

A referral to Dr Greenslade should contain the following information:

  • Patient name, date of birth, address, and Medicare number
  • BMI (click here to make use of our BMI calculator)
  • Patient history
  • Current medications
  • Relevant scans and pathology results
  • Referring doctor details including provider number

Additionally it is helpful if you include information on whether or not the patient has private health insurance. Bariatric procedures are generally only covered on the gold level and it is advisable for all insured patients to check with their health insurance ahead of time. This way we can ensure we are giving accurate and complete informed financial consent from the very first appointment.

Indefinite referrals are recommended post-operatively to ensure we can bulk-bill as patients will be returning to us regularly for at least 12 months.

Pathology and investigations

After surgery, Dr Greenslade reviews patients every 2-4 months for the  first year. We provide pathology request forms for the next appointment  at the end of each one, but occasionally these do get lost. In the event a patient requests a pathology referral for Dr Greenslade please  include:

  • Full blood count
  • E/LFT-s
  • Iron studies
  • Vitamin B12
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin A
  • Thiamine
  • Folate
  • Zinc

After the patient has been discharged from Dr Greenslade's regular care, we recommend you follow up with the same blood tests at least once per year.
