Sleeve Gastrectomy
Dr. Justin Greenslade’s practice offers a suite of advanced general surgical procedures tailored to your needs.

What is laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy?
Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy is a restrictive bariatric operation. It involves removing about two thirds of the stomach to leave a 200ml stomach tube (or sleeve) instead of a 2 litre stomach sac. It is performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery) and is not reversible.
The sleeve, while restrictive, does not involve the placement of a restrictive band like the lap band procedure. Most foods such as bread, meat, and fruit can still be eaten, but in smaller portions. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is one of the most commonly performed weight-loss operations in Australia.
Weight loss occurs because patients generally feel full after smaller meals due to the reduced stomach size. The smaller stomach also produces less of the hormone ghrelin, which is involved in hunger regulation.
What is life like with a sleeve?
Initially, patients follow a fluid or puréed diet for about four weeks. As recovery progresses, the diet can gradually return to normal textures with a focus on balanced, healthy choices. Most people find they prefer three smaller meals a day, often around a quarter of their previous portion sizes. When dining out, an entrée-sized meal is usually sufficient to feel comfortable. Many people describe this as a different experience from traditional dieting, as smaller meals can feel more satisfying over time.
Apart from a commitment to healthy eating, no foods are specifically banned. Snacking, especially on junk food, is to be avoided as it will generally counteract the effects of the surgery. Alcohol should be kept to a minimum or avoided altogether.
In some instances, Dr Greenslade may recommend a gastric bypass instead of a sleeve (eg. if you suffer from reflux or Type 2 diabetes). You can learn more about the gastric bypass here.
