Take charge of your health with weight loss surgery
Sick of going in circles with diets? We help people find a fresh start with weight loss surgery that’s backed by decades of experience. Led by Dr Justin Greenslade and located at Greenslopes Hospital, Brisbane, our team offers clear guidance and genuine support — no lectures, no judgement.

With thousands of bariatric surgeries behind him, Dr Greenslade knows every case is different. He’ll support you in making the choice that feels right for you.
You’ll hear about choices like sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, and single anastomosis (mini) gastric bypass. Some weight loss procedures are better for certain health issues or goals, and we’ll explain what each one involves.
Our weight loss surgery options
We offer three main types of surgeries that support people in losing weight. Each option is designed to suit different needs and health goals. We’ll talk you through what’s involved, so you know exactly what to expect.

Sleeve gastrectomy
A laparoscopic procedure that removes part of the stomach and creates a narrow tube or “sleeve.” The sleeve, while restrictive, does not involve the placement of a gastric band like lap band surgery, and most foods can still be eaten in smaller amounts. It’s one of the more commonly performed bariatric surgeries in Australia.

Gastric bypass
A procedure that creates a small stomach pouch and connects it to part of the small bowel, so food bypasses most of the stomach. This approach has been used for many years and follows a well-established surgical method.

Single anastomosis gastric bypass
A variation of gastric bypass that uses one join in the intestine. It involves creating a smaller stomach pouch and redirecting part of the digestive tract. The procedure is less complex than some other gastric bypass surgeries, though it may not suit people with reflux concerns.
Our general surgery options
Alongside bariatric care, Dr Justin Greenslade provides a range of general surgical procedures.

Hernia repair
Hernia repair at our centre is carried out using open or laparoscopic techniques, depending on the location and size of the hernia. Most patients stay in hospital overnight while the area begins to heal.

Laparoscopic fundoplication
This procedure reinforces the valve between the stomach and oesophagus by wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the lower oesophagus. It’s usually done laparoscopically, with a short stay in hospital.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy
Gallbladder removal is performed through small keyhole incisions and is most often used for gallstone-related issues. Patients generally stay one night in hospital and take some time at home to recover.

Live in a remote area?
If you live in a remote or regional town and you’re looking to undergo bariatric surgery, Brisbane may be the closest centre offering these procedures. They’re not always available in smaller hospitals, so many people travel here for their surgery.
We can help you map out every detail, including what documents you need and how to apply for government travel subsidies or use super to cover costs.
We also offer telehealth consultations where appropriate, allowing you to complete initial appointments and follow-ups from home. This can help minimise the number of trips you need to make.
We’re happy to answer your questions and help you feel ready.

Frequently asked questions
Cover varies between funds and policies. Some policies include item numbers for weight loss surgery, and others list them as exclusions, so it’s worth checking your policy before booking. Common item numbers include 31575 for sleeve gastrectomy and 31572, 31581, 31584 for gastric bypass. If your policy doesn’t include the cover you need, you may need to upgrade and serve a waiting period, or consider self-funding.
Some patients choose to use a payment plan through Total Lifestyle Credit (TLC). They’re the only patient-funding platform sanctioned by AHPRA and offer finance options through an online application. You also have the option of applying to access your superannuation early to pay for surgery.
Changes to eating habits happen in stages, and they can vary depending on the type of surgery you have. You’ll review all the information about these stages with the team before your procedure, so you'll know what the first few weeks look like and how your intake progresses over time. This gives you a clear idea of what to expect during the early recovery period.
Long-term outcomes can be different for everyone. Surgery is only one part of the process, and your follow-up appointments help you build habits that contribute to more sustainable weight loss over time.
Quality of life is personal and can be influenced by many factors outside of surgery. Your follow-up care gives you time to check in, discuss changes, and make any adjustments you may want along the way.
